ManhwaDen is a multi-language online database for English speakers who wish to read manhwa, also known as Korean comics. ManhwaDen has over 150 manhwa titles with more than 1,000 manhwa chapters in various genres such as romance, action, fantasy, horror, drama, and comedy. The initial purpose of ManhwaDen was to provide a free, easily accessible online customizable manhwa database, as English manhwa print media comic books and online paid manhwa reading companies are limited in titles and usually have an age restriction, resulting in both being expensive to purchase. As time went by, it became apparent that some information stored in the ManhwaDen database could offer insightful trends of the different manhwa genres by both title and serialization, along with how popular changes have occurred and evolved over the years.
The evolution of manhwa can not only be shown through its published year, but also through the number of chapters and genre popularity according to the demographics they aim to target – whether they be for teenagers, adults, or mature adults. Based on our ManhwaDen database, we are able to analyze and present empirical evidence with factual statistics based on collected big data of genres categorically from 2006 to 2018. Throughout this empirical study, we categorize and divide geared audiences under the ages of 13-18 into teenagers, thereafter analyze and compare the changing popularity of their most reached type of genre such as romance, action, fantasy, horror, drama, and comedy for each annual popularity of genre with chosen manhwa comic titles. The rest of this paper is comprised of the following brief literature review in section 2, ManhwaDen Data Analysis in section 3, followed by our conclusion in section 4 and some interesting topics for future work in section 5.
Historical Background of ManhwaDen
The origins of manhwa as Korean comics are historical, and the representation of manhwa and Korean contemporary culture as Korean graphic novels is deeply intertwined. In fact, Korean comic books have experienced an incipient period, a burgeoning stage, and have adapted continuously in consideration of ideal social conditions, to the extent of even overcoming setbacks. Korea had an era of Japanese comics until liberation from the Japanese colonial period, followed by an era of post-colonial comics that saw the emergence of manhwa heroes and heroines, and of historic evolution related to the comics associated with a government. Subsequently, taking offline, based on modern society as a new growth industry and promoting various kinds of big three comics financially aided by government censorship resulted in an era of mass production. Afterward, this kind of big three comics, via the introduction of Korean heroines and heroes, became an era of mesh production, and it spread to the world through the comic market. Today’s Korean graphic novels, based on official and symbolic comics, do not choose a binary triangular representational decision between Japan, China, or Russia. This is based on the promotion of creative stories using folklore for art, although it is a culture of art creation.
From the manhwa industry to the intermediary, there was an era of nurture since 1990, when the industry achieved dramatic growth in line with fiscal support from the government and the publication of the Korean cartoon standard book collection. Since 2000, the era of steeping in mold tea to create corporate value in the growth industry has begun. Furthermore, in terms of its art, manhwa has seen differences in narratology depending on social and historical realities, and has also seen related facts about proper time and space through its internal and external refinement. Manhwa’s internal history has gone through an operational pre-modern era, while it adheres to military comic traits in future comics. The era also focuses on preliminary playful cultural industrial display rooted in East Asia compared to other comics through its external historical organization. Also, in terms of visual process, touch, script, frame layout, backdrop, covers, and other characteristics have progressed to the fundamental social conditions of contemporary culture and matured in terms of content. It then exerts a world-class status in terms of an ideal human condition and faces harsh social realities.
After changing the president of the Korean Peninsula from the 1980s, the Korean comics representative expanded via the reintroduction of several new characters and the setting of respective books. In only a few years, it pioneered the world comic industry. Since the liberal interpretation of the military government, the manhwa representative has taken several years of public delight compared to the public’s displeasure, creating a ton of clear light. With the passage of time, the number of errant foreign workers has decreased and improved. Yet eventually, the planting recently began and spread to the world through imaginative art and cultural work, the quality of manhwa and its readership reaching a few who have many roles. Finally, we have come to the point of working together to inherit the manhwa of the world.
